That’s a great question! During the Age of Discovery, European explorers sailed past the beautiful island we now know as Taiwan. Portuguese sailors, upon seeing the breathtaking shoreline, couldn't help but exclaim, “Ilha Formosa!” which means “Beautiful Island.” As my family roots are deep in Taiwan, I chose the name to honor my parents and my heritage, striving to create a product that is both beautiful to look at and exquisite to eat.
We ship to all 50 US states! Unfortunately, we do not offer international delivery at this time. Since our products are temperature sensitive, we highly recommend delivering to an address where someone can receive the goods personally. Please see this page for detailed shipping information for more details.
We primarily ship Monday through Wednesday to prevent your order from sitting in a facility over the weekend. Shipments within the Bay Area typically arrive in one day, while the rest of the country usually takes 2–3 days. You will receive a separate shipping notification with tracking information via email. (Note: Occasional carrier delays may still occur.)
Yes! If you would like us to hold your order until closer to a specific date, please specify this in the comments at checkout. While we cannot guarantee an exact delivery date, we will do our best to ensure it arrives within two days before/on your requested date.
The easiest way is to use our bulk shipping spreadsheet using this link. Once completed, please email the spreadsheet to info@formosachocolates.com. We will review the order and send an invoice within 1–2 business days.
In-person delivery is currently suspended. However, if you are interested in becoming a driver for Formosa Chocolates, please send us your resume!
We don't have a retail shop yet, but we offer two convenient pickup options: 1) At Tea on Piedmont (1–2 day lead time required). 2) At our kitchen in San Rafael (by appointment). Local businesses interested in carrying Formosa Chocolates should contact us via email.
We absolutely welcome custom orders for special events, whether large or small! Please email us at info@formosachocolates.com with details about your ideas and budget, and we will get back to you within 1–2 business days to discuss the possibilities.
Our chocolates are made with the freshest ingredients and contain no preservatives, so we recommend savoring them within 2 weeks for the best taste.
For longer-term storage (up to 6 months), you can freeze them by following these steps:
- Wrap the entire box tightly in several layers of plastic wrap.
- Store in the freezer.
- When ready to enjoy, remove from the freezer and allow to reach room temperature before unwrapping. (This is critical to prevent sugar or fat bloom—the rough, grayish texture.)
Thawed bonbons should be enjoyed within 2 weeks.
Chocolate is best kept in a cool, dry environment, away from sunlight and strong-smelling food. The ideal conditions are 55°F to 65°F and around 50% humidity. A wine fridge is a perfect storage solution!
Our chocolates are not allergen-free. They are crafted in a commercial kitchen where peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, egg, dairy, and soy are all processed. While we take every precaution to prevent cross-contamination, we strongly recommend avoiding our products if you or the recipient have severe food allergies.
We carefully package and time our shipments to minimize the risk of damage or melting. If your order arrives damaged, please email us immediately with photos. All shipments include USPS insurance up to $100.
